Description

One of the most beloved American patriotic songs, America the Beautiful was first composed in 1883 by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward to accompany the hymn O Mother dear, Jerusalem. In 1910, the melody was used to set the text of the poem “Pike’s Peak” by Katharine Lee Bates. Having died in 1903, Ward never knew the national popularity his composition would attain. This setting for brass quintet by Chris Savage highlights Ward’s timeless melody through lyricism, rich harmonic development, and fanfare.
